Althorp Estate, set in the heart of its own 550 acre estate, is home to Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer since 1992. It has been the home to the Spencer family for over 500 years and is the resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales, located on a private secluded island. This is no longer accessible to the public, however, visitors can visit a nearby memorial, leave tributes and walk around the lake.
A Grade 1 listed Tudor stately home, it contains a fascinating variety of furniture, ceramics, fine interiors and paintings by Gainsborough and Rubens. During the 18th Century, the house became a major cultural hub in England, attracting many prominent members of Britain's ruling class.
After visiting the house, take a leisurely walk around the beautiful gardens and grounds featuring some historically significant sites, including an Iron Age settlement and a 1,600 year old well.
Stop for refreshments in the Stables Cafe, explore the gift shop,and take time to look through the wonderful books written by Charles Spencer.
